Restaurant Review: Mandarin House - 3 out of 4 Star Rating

by Molly Abraham

***************************************************************

Wei Ming Shen offers authentic dishes from both Szechuan and Cantonese perspectives in a small restaurant in the heart of downtown Windsor that seats just 75. The emphasis is on food, not decor. Choices are many, but you could stop with the list of chef's specials tucked in the front of the menu. They include steamed fish with ginger and green onions or black bean sauce, beef and eggplant with garlic sauce, one of several hot pot dishes, smoke flavor duck and beef tenderloin with black pepper and Chinese broccoli. Lobster, still in its shell but cut into accessible pieces, may be had with ginger and green onions or black bean sauce and comes in single or double versions ($28.88 Canadian for two whole lobsters). Noodle dishes are also notable, ranging from rice vermicelli Singapore style to fried noodles with shredded meat and vegetables. Lunch and dinner during the week, dinner only Saturday and Sunday. Beer and wine. Average dinner for two, without alcohol, $30 (Canadian).

Restaurant Review: Thanasis Olympus - 2 out of 4 Rating

by Molly Abraham

***************************************************************

Thanasis Blue RoomAlthough all the familiar Greektown-style dishes are on the menu, this family-run spot with an eye popping decor full of statuary, classic columns and fountains also served dishes from the perspective of matriarch Maria Pontikis who hails from a tiny island in the Aegean. That includes spiced ground beef patties, salted cod, spinach pie from her special recipe, butterflied barbecued quail and pork and chicken kebobs. There are a couple of complete saganaki, soup, Greek salad, entree and dessert dinners for two ($34.95 Canadian) which offer a huge array of dishes. Bargain-basement prices are the norm here, especially given the hefty exchange rate on American money. Despite the statuary, this is not a fancy restaurant but a casually comfortable one. Lunch and dinner. Full bar. Average dinner check for two, without alcohol: $20 (Canadian).
