Restaurant Review:
Aldo Goldberg's
by Eric Bonnici
***************************************************************
Windsor's rich diverse cultural and ethnic background has given
rise to some of the finest restaurants around. In fact, Erie
street has gained great recognition for its culture and cusine.
Aldo Goldberg's is the newest restaurant on the Erie street
strip. It was Earlier this month that I experienced what it
really means to "Mangare Bene" at this unique establishment.
We were first served some fabulous chicken parmesan appetizers.
Not only were they delicious but they were free. Sous Chef Tisha
Trudel explains:
"The concept of free appetizers is an old one. The French call it
'Amuse de Bouche', to stimulate the palate, and in our case, to
get customers thinking about great food. Everything from the
'amuse de bouche' to the desserts are made by head chef Jeff
Hicks and myself. (With the exception of bread)."
We enjoyed our appetizers while relaxing in the wonderful ambience
produced in the cozy dining room. The lighting is perfect, the
aroma of Italian food, and Miles Davis' music playing in the
background made for a wonderful meal.
Throughout the room you will find black and white photos related
to Windsor circa late 1950's to early '60's along with family
photos of owners Ris Masetti of Kurley's, Tim Springstead of
Nemo's, and Greg Gaudette.
Aldo Goldberg's brews up a fabulous Zuppa. Here is what Tisha had
to say:
"One of our popular soups, 'Pappa Pomodoro', Tuscan Bread and
Tomato, will be featured at the March 2nd Heart and Stroke
Foundations' Soup Kitchen and our bone-tingling Puttanesca
will be our featured pasta for the 1st annual Kidney Foundation
Pasta Lunch at the Windsor Armouries Wednesday, April 4th."
We ordered the Crab Stuffed Portbellini Mushrooms. They were
tasty and a nice change from the regular mushrooms you find
every where else.
I had BBQ Quale, which was the special of the day. It was
fabulous and my first time trying quail too. The daily specials
are created using special ingredients at their peak. The meals
offer a diverse choice of side order combinations. This was one
of my favorite parts about the meal. The Garlic Mashed Potatoes and
Green Beans in Tomatoe Sauce with Onions had a fantastic zest to
them.
The unique desserts of tiramisu and raspberry cheese cake were a
perfect end to a wonderful Italian meal. The tiramisu was
presented in a wine glass. Tiramisu is a cool, refreshing Italian
dessert that once tasted, leaves an indelible impression on you.
Also known as "Tuscan Trifle," the dessert was initially created
in Siena, in the northwestern Italian province of Tuscany.
Tiramisu basically includes Mascarpone cheese, raw eggs, sugar,
espresso coffee, ladyfingers, liquor and cocoa. Heavy cream is an
optional ingredient. The richness and "mouth experience" depends
on the quantity of each ingredient, and the care of preparation.
Obviously Aldo Goldberg's puts some quality ingredients and
preparation into theirs. The raspberry cheese cake was delightful
as well. I am not a big cheese cake fan so it takes a lot to
impress me in that area.
The menu is seasonal, and will be changing as of this May.
Lighter ingredients and combinations are used in the summer,
heavier in the winter and availability of fresh product is
always a factor.
The service was excellent and friendly. In fact, the Chef and
Sous Chef both made trips out to the dining room and chatted with
us. They make frequent trips into the dining room to ensure
everything is just right and give patrons the opportunity to ask
questions or make comments.
If you really want to experience what it means to 'Mangare Bene'
then definitely visit Aldo Goldberg's.

Subscriber Feedback
Whats Your Favorite Restaurant?
Edited by Eric Bonnici
************
I am happy to report that several subscribers have
emailed regarding restaurant recommendations here
is what the had to say:
---
Gerry Termel Recommends Tony Macaroni's
Toni Macaroni on Ottawa Street is one restaurant that comes to
mind since you asked. My wife and I return to this restaurant
because you feel like you are at home and the Italian food is
great. The restaurant is small, but the service and food are well
worth the wait. No matter what dishes we have ordered we always
have food left over to bring home for the next day. I always
recommend this restaurant to people who ask me for ideas
concerning Italian food. The place is simple but the food is
superb.
The Eyes On Windsor E-Zine helps me to plan upcoming events that
I would like to attend. Thanks, this is great.

Diane Byron Eats Out Alot!!!
Diane on Piccolo's, Rosa's, Sole Mio's, Rooster's,
Windsor Raceway, and Bentley's
Eric :
I haven't been to Piccolo's in a while but I have been going
there for years and years and years {I lived in that
neighbourhood for quite a few of them} and I have always liked it
there. The food was good and I don't remember anything I didn't
like there.
For pizza though you can't beat Rosa's on Walker Rd - it's take
out or deliver, not eat in, but it is the best pizza in the city.
We get bacon, mushrooms, green peppers and extra cheese or
vegetarian - those are my 2 favorites - they also have great
lasagna and my husband likes their ribs - food is great and
portions very generous. We always get it delivered and service
is speedy and food is hot when it comes. We like it so well that
I have their phone number on my speed dial.
I work for a non-profit agency on Howard Ave that provides
support programs for low-income families. Last Friday was one of
my volunteer's birthday so I took her out for lunch. We walked
down to Sole Mio's at Howard and Erie - we decided on there
because it was close to the office and also because their staff
had been generous at Christmas and donated some toys to us for
needy children. The owner at that time had said that she would be
glad to help wherever she could in any future fundraisers we may
have. So we decided to go there for lunch although we did not
mention where we were from.
We were both very much impressed with the decor, the service and
the food - it was all very inviting and comfortable. The lunch
menu had many interesting choices - we both opted for the
friitatta - with soup or salad and bread (we gobbled up every
slice) - it was all delicious and just enough for a lunch. I hate
that stuffed feeling at lunch time. We enjoyed it so much that we
are going back next month for my birthday and try something else.
Last Sunday night while everyone else was watching the Superbowl,
we went with another couple to Rooster's in Tecumseh - it was
nice and clean inside and the waitress was very friendly. I had
steak and my husband had liver and onions [yuk] and both were a
bit dry (The Keg is my favorite spot for steak). The other
couple had a rib & shrimp combo and a chicken dinner and both of
them enjoyed theirs very much.
Have you been to the Raceway since they renovated the slots? The
new cafeteria there is nice - they have a good buffet as well as
burgers and sandwiches - the food is okay for a cafeteria but
they didn't have hot dogs anymore and that was my husband's
favorite. The seating area is very comfortable and I liked that
part a lot better than the old one.
And then there is Bentley's - it has great lunch specials and a
punchout card that is good for a free lunch after you buy 5.
There is a good selection and their "fat fries" are delicious.
Can you tell I eat out a lot? Well I do - I seldom cook anymore -
when we don't eat out, my husband does most of the cooking - he
makes a great spaghetti sauce.

Codger on Casino Windsor
The following is an email from a subscriber who did not give their
name and the email name they go by is codoger. Here is what codoger
had to say in regards to our last issue on Casino Windsor (see our
web site for that issue www.eyesonwindsor.com ).
Eaten there many occasions at the Atrium Court, food not bad, but everyone
I talk with says, that they should go back to their original homemade big
pizza by the slice. No one that I have to talk to likes the individual
small ones. other then that, I usually eat their sweet and sour pork with
rice or hot dog combo.
Looking forward to finding out the events for St. Patty's Day. Would like
to know where a great place to go in Windsor, with real Irish music to
celebrate with my husbands family and mine on this day of theirs. Would
like to make my husband feel like he's back home for one evening .

Fred McLeod on Piccolo's
Hi I did eat at Piccolo,s on two occasions and both times ordered
pizza.I found it to be excellent as well as the service. Back in
the sixties this same place was called Annies Dairy Bar and I
use to stop there for breakfast.
My wife and I go to the Hungry Wolf just about every Friday nite.
It is located about 1 mile south of the ec row expressway on
walker rd on east side of the road. We go there for the wraps
but the whole menu is awesome as is the service. Being smoke free
is also a plus.
